Summary

"When his traditional Latinx family has problems accepting his true gender, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo。 With the help of his cousin and best friend Maritza, he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free。 However, the ghost he summons is actually Julian Diaz, the school's resident bad boy, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death。 He's determined to find out what happened and tie off some loose ends before he leaves。 Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want。 But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave"--

You remember when you were in middle school and you would gobble down books in a day? This book made me feel that way again。 It was so enchanting and unlike anything I had ever read before。 The characters were so full of life and the story so bright and you could tell how much love was poured into this book。 At times maybe it was a bit predictable but honestly that isnt a bad thing in my book。 Rather it's really satisfying when you can say hah I knew it and it only shows that it was well set up。 You remember when you were in middle school and you would gobble down books in a day? I really liked this book。 The characters were great and the world was well developed。 The plot was a little predictable and the book felt a little rushed in the end。 Would recommend。

This book had such rich cultural representation and did a fantastic job at displaying the turmoil Yadriel faced trying to be included in his cultural practices and to belong to his family, and to himself。 Queerness was written so beautifully and truthfully for both Yadriel and Julian, so powerfully quiet and accepting。I did however see the end coming from a mile away and while I didn’t dislike it that made it kind of disappointing。 Also it feels like while the book is good, very little actually This book had such rich cultural representation and did a fantastic job at displaying the turmoil Yadriel faced trying to be included in his cultural practices and to belong to his family, and to himself。 Queerness was written so beautifully and truthfully for both Yadriel and Julian, so powerfully quiet and accepting。I did however see the end coming from a mile away and while I didn’t dislike it that made it kind of disappointing。 Also it feels like while the book is good, very little actually happens for the majority。 。。。more

Wheeeww, the Latinx representation in this is phenomenal。 I've never felt so loved to be a part of this beautiful community。 I just know my younger self would have adored this religiously。 This is a perfect marriage between fantasy and realism。 I did feel like the ending wasn't realistic as it should have been。 But, then again it's a young adult and a fantasy at its finest。 But the brujeria, the LGBTQIA+, and the Latinx representations truly warmed my heart throughout。 I wished that was the life Wheeeww, the Latinx representation in this is phenomenal。 I've never felt so loved to be a part of this beautiful community。 I just know my younger self would have adored this religiously。 This is a perfect marriage between fantasy and realism。 I did feel like the ending wasn't realistic as it should have been。 But, then again it's a young adult and a fantasy at its finest。 But the brujeria, the LGBTQIA+, and the Latinx representations truly warmed my heart throughout。 I wished that was the life I led。 Family is a barrier and a bridge, all at once。 It takes an open mind and heart to keep a family together。 。。。more

The book is focused on character growth and relationship building。 The plot was a little slow with not a lot of action, due to the building of characters, but it wrapped up nicely at the end。 The trans rep was remarkable and respectful。 The interactions between Yadriel and Martiza were so good! I could totally relate to their relationship as I grew up super close to my cousins and it just made me smile。 What can you say about Julian, he’s lovable, irritating, thoughtful, loud, caring, and so muc The book is focused on character growth and relationship building。 The plot was a little slow with not a lot of action, due to the building of characters, but it wrapped up nicely at the end。 The trans rep was remarkable and respectful。 The interactions between Yadriel and Martiza were so good! 2。5 ? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 On the positive side, which is rather large, all the representation was awesome, and I adored the main characters。 These things being said, unfortunately the plot was very basic, the side characters were underdeveloped, and I didn’t like the ending with the whole resurrection trope。 I didn’t expect anything amazing from the story when it comes to pros and such, so I really didn’t it mind that much。 To conclude, it’s the silly, wholesome queer YA story I needed this spooky season。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Loved this, the main cast are all lovable and fairly well rounded characters, particularly Julian and his fierce protectiveness of his friends and family。 Yadriel's journey with his family accepting him and his identity as a brujo feels so well done。 I feel the twist with his uncle could have been a bit more fleshed out, it was kind of glossed over that they lost a member of their community suddenly but I suppose they had already kind of ostracized him。I do think some of the plot and relationshi Loved this, the main cast are all lovable and fairly well rounded characters, particularly Julian and his fierce protectiveness of his friends and family。 Yadriel's journey with his family accepting him and his identity as a brujo feels so well done。 I feel the twist with his uncle could have been a bit more fleshed out, it was kind of glossed over that they lost a member of their community suddenly but I suppose they had already kind of ostracized him。I do think some of the plot and relationship development was a little bit skimmed over or sped up, but I think that's fairly typical for YA so I didn't really mind。 In particular Julian and Yadriel's relationship developed quite fast which didn't feel super realistic but they are angsty teens in a difficult situation so it didn't distract me too much。 I also think some more exploration into the gendered roles in the magic system would be interesting, because while Yadriel challenged some of it, it still felt a little binary to me? I also loved the little details throughout; Julian and Maritza bickering, Julian getting idioms slightly wrong every time, Julian and Yadriel arguing about music。 Overall I just really enjoyed this :) 。。。more

I have been staying away from YA fantasy lately because I was afraid that I wouldn’t feel connected to characters that were so young anymore。 As I am getting older, I am gravitating to adult fantasy and romance but I am happy to say that my theory was completely wrong。 Cemetery Boys made me feel nostalgic over that new, young love feeling。 I loved the cute, butterfly-feeling moments between Yadriel and Julian。 I am still looking up fan art of them and I finished this book a few days ago。 The mag I have been staying away from YA fantasy lately because I was afraid that I wouldn’t feel connected to characters that were so young anymore。 As I am getting older, I am gravitating to adult fantasy and romance but I am happy to say that my theory was completely wrong。 Cemetery Boys made me feel nostalgic over that new, young love feeling。 I loved the cute, butterfly-feeling moments between Yadriel and Julian。 I am still looking up fan art of them and I finished this book a few days ago。 The magic and mystery elements throughout the plot were intriguing。 I loved reading about their history and Yadriel’s strength。 I cried so much at the ending, which was unexpected。 The middle did drag bit for me where I kept putting the book down and picking it back up。 Then, I could not put it down for the last 100 pages。 Reading YA books as an adult is a different type of feeling。 I feel protective of the characters I love and I am brought back to the reason why my love for reading started with YA fantasy。 Themes: - Coming of age - Young love - Paranormal- Urban Fantasy - Mystery Ratings: Overall - 4⭐️Shock - 4😱Tears - 3💧 。。。more

Yadriel's family had the special ability to help a dead person's spirit pass safely to the next life。 He wasn't allowed to become recognized as a brujo, a male who helped with the passing on, because he identified as trans and his family didn't accept it。 When Yadriel's cousin died and the family could not find his spirit to usher it on, Yadriel decided perform the ritual to summon his cousin's spirit。 Instead, he summoned the spirit of a recently murdered boy who went to his school。 This was a Yadriel's family had the special ability to help a dead person's spirit pass safely to the next life。 He wasn't allowed to become recognized as a brujo, a male who helped with the passing on, because he identified as trans and his family didn't accept it。 When Yadriel's cousin died and the family could not find his spirit to usher it on, Yadriel decided perform the ritual to summon his cousin's spirit。 Instead, he summoned the spirit of a recently murdered boy who went to his school。 This was a very interesting plot for a story。 I loved the relationship between Yadriel and his cousin, Maritza。 She fully supported Yadriel and helped him whenever possible。 I enjoyed the descriptions of how his family prepared for and celebrated Dia de los Muertos。 The ability to see a loved one's spirit and converse with them like Yadriel's family was able to do would be wonderful。 Julian, the boy who's spirit Yadriel summoned, was a good contrast to Yadriel。 They taught each other bit about how they lived in their worlds。 I was not so sold on their romance。 It seemed very rushed at the end and then bam - relationship。 The villain was not a surprise, but believable。 The ending tied everything up nicely。 Overall, an interesting and unique story。 。。。more

This is the first book I've read in a while that was going along perfectly fine, maybe a little mediocre, but was absolutely ruined by an awful reveal at the end。 I HATED the way this book ended。 I won't lie, if the book had a decent ending, it would have probably only gotten 3 or 4 stars because it was shaping out to be a mediocre read。 However the ending alone makes me want to give this book 1 star。 I say the book itself is mediocre because it really is your standard YA affair。 Almost from the This is the first book I've read in a while that was going along perfectly fine, maybe a little mediocre, but was absolutely ruined by an awful reveal at the end。 I HATED the way this book ended。 I won't lie, if the book had a decent ending, it would have probably only gotten 3 or 4 stars because it was shaping out to be a mediocre read。 However the ending alone makes me want to give this book 1 star。 I say the book itself is mediocre because it really is your standard YA affair。 Almost from the VERY beginning the romance in the book was telegraphed。 It was extremely annoying, and almost turned me off of it from that point alone。 Add all of that to the fact that the reveal at the end felt really lazy and undeserved and I am just done with this book entirely。 I cannot recommend this book, just skip it and read something better。 。。。more

This was on a suggested book list for Hispanic Heritage month and I’m so glad I picked it up。 Not only steeped in Latinx culture but bonus magical powers and mystery too。 Not to mention a beautiful trans protagonist who deftly brings to life the emotional journey a trans person takes with friends, family, and culture。 Well done。

A really nice read! Lot's of great stuff going on here - my favorite parts being the great sense of community - for good or worse - that keeps reverberating through the book。 The feeling of being on the outside that Yadriel experiences is gutwrenching at most times, and although this book contains lots of really serious stuff, I read through it with speed and a good sense of flow。 Also, great humor, and not only Yadriel is well written。 Really looking forward to book 2。 A really nice read!
